Lou Mitchell's and politics

We enjoyed lunch today at another historic Chicago landmark, Lou Mitchell's.  Famous for its Milk Duds, doughnut holes and yummy food, Lou Mitchell's has been in Chicago since 1923. Lunch was good, we enjoyed chatting with our lunch neighbors at the communal dining table and watching the hustle and bustle of the staff.  The service is also impressive for as busy as they were.

We knew this historic restaurant was often a place where politicians come to be seen, but we were still a little surprised when it actually happened. Alexi Giannoulias, a candidate for U.S. Senate came by, shook our hands, and asked us for our vote.  Some old fashioned politicking in action. Now, being from little old St. Pete, I've never really seen this actually practiced.  But here, it's normal. A few weeks ago, at the El stop a few blocks from our house Rahm Emanuel greeted people as they went to work.  Two more firsts for me in the Windy City.

Chicago Cultural Center

A few weeks ago, Matt and I wandered over to the Chicago Cultural Center on Michigan Avenue, across the street from Millennium Park.  The Chicago Cultural Center was once home to Chicago's central library.  This landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the most visited locations in Chicago.  Marble staircases, stained glass, gorgeous views, I can see why people would flock here to listen to lectures, discussions, watch films or simply sit and read in the reading room (this is on my list for a winter activity!).  It was hard not to imagine a grander time, and the people that might have passed through this building. Just an amazing place.

P.S.  A few of the pictures might give you a hint that this was once a library....can you guess which ones?
